What is an elastomeric membrane?

The elastomeric membrane is a flat roof covering that can be installed on homes, trailers, garages, warehouses, commercial and industrial buildings, and more.

It is composed of two layers that are heat-welded together with a torch during installation. The base layer is a polyester reinforcement surrounded by SBS-modified bitumen (synthetic rubber), and the top layer is made of polymer bitumen.

The base layer is glued over the entire roof surface, then our roofers gradually unroll the second membrane while heating it with a torch so it melts and fuses with the base layer.

Once fused, the two layers form a single soft and rubbery membrane that fits into the roof’s corners and crevices. Once dried and hardened, it provides complete waterproofing.

Why choose white granules?

After installing the elastomeric membrane on your flat roof, our roofers add granules (small stones) on top to reinforce the surface.

These granules not only protect the elastomeric membrane from damage caused by UV rays and weather, but also allow you to customize the look of the roof.

Several granule colors are available (white, gray, black, green, and others), but white granules reflect sunlight, which reduces heat inside buildings and lowers air conditioning costs.

Although slightly more expensive than TPO membrane, the elastomeric membrane is highly durable. It resists rot and impact, and is easy to repair.

During this roof maintenance, our roofers will inspect the membrane across the entire surface, repair any damaged areas, and seal the edges around equipment that emerges from the roof.

Total Waterproofing

The high level of waterproofing provided by the elastomeric membrane makes it the most popular flat roof covering in residential and commercial settings. Thanks to the polymers added to the bitumen and the polyester reinforcement, it is rubbery, thick, strong, and highly resistant.

And since it is softened with a torch during installation, it adheres to the roof, to the roof edges (roof-to-wall junction), and around any equipment protruding from the roof, effectively preventing water from penetrating.

Additionally, to ensure total waterproofing, our roofers seal the base around this equipment (roof ventilator, air conditioning outlets, chimney, etc.).

To do so, they use a type of sealant that is compatible with the bitumen in the elastomeric membrane (a sealant made from bitumen and polyethers). This ensures optimal adhesion and makes water infiltration impossible.
